Trade Your Dreams For His Glory

Catch me dreaming, Lord, and trade my dreams for your glory. There is not one of my dreams that I would not give up for the the glory I have seen in God. The devastation of my dreams being removed from the range of logical possibility has allowed me to trade in those dreams as a willing participant in His plan, not mine. Now I am starting to see a  glory that is go much brighter than my human pitiful short-sided dreams.

It all started with a new song (to me).

Daily I pick a song that speaks to me. Usually it is one I have heard before and quickly transports my heart to praise and worship. Once in a while I get lost in a new song that bowls me over.

“Every wrong will be made right…”

The wrongs of life are not for me to fix all of the time. Fix what I am capable of. Let go of what I have no control over. Simple, don’t make it so complicated.

“The road is straight and the burden’s light…”

The burdens are for God to deal with, not us. When we have used up all of our efforts, resources, and our own will, there is nothing left to offer. So, at times, there are no more burdens. They don’t exist because we have no control over anything except our spirit, our love and fellowship with our Lord.

“I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.” ~ Psalm 9:1 NIV

This can be as simple as the Lord has given it to us. He has shown us the path.

  • Either we get on the path, or we don’t
  • Either we stay on the path, or we don’t
  • Either we trust in his perfect path, or we don’t.
  • Either we accept his forgiveness when we get off the path, or we don’t

All the but-this and but-that, all the except-this and except-that only wears US down. He patiently waits while we set it all down at his feet. For most of us that means doing it over and over again.

With practice, and the the most patient loving Lord who knows our pain, we finally succumb to relishing in his plan. NOTHING what we expected for our lives. Not even a glimpse of what we envisioned much less dreamed of.

God places on us the desires of our hearts. That is different from the things we typically think of as what we dream of for our lives.

“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” ~ Psalm 37:4 NIV

When we see distinctions in scripture, from God’s perspective, we can set aside the world’s view of what we supposedly “deserve.”

  • Distinction between deserving our dreams and receiving the glorious desires of the heart given by the Lord
  • Distinction between deserving happiness instead of the complete joy we can have in the Lord
  • Distinction between deserving wants that others have and the satiety of having all of our needs met by God himself

We do not “deserve” anything. Not even the most logical dreams. Not even the most basic of dreams. We are dust, not deserving of anything.

Our dreams seem to become quite shallow as we find the depth of the story of God’s plan for our lives. When I finally saw this, I could see the plans of God taking shape in my brokenness.

Instead we get the inheritance of our Lord and Savior, that we do not deserve. As Christians our inheritance is not only sustaining, it is full of treasures beyond our understanding. Our dreams cannot even make up the visions of this kind of inheritance.

I desire HIS story, not mine. I will gladly trade in my dreams for HIS glory.

I trade in everything for eternal purposes, not mine. Will I get this right at every moment of every day, probably not. My heart’s desire can help me get there. The grace and mercy of God can make that room, that space, for what is completely of him to occupy.

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ~ Philippians 4:7

Featuring Matt Maher

Album CD

Album MP3

Song – Make Room (feat. Matt Maher)

[Verse 1]
Family hiding from the storm
Found no place at the keeper’s door
It was for this a Child was born
To save a world so cold and hollow

[Verse 2]
The sleeping town did not know
That lying in a manger low
A Savior King who had no home
Has come to heal our sorrows

[Chorus 1]
Is there room in your heart?
Is there room in your heart?
Is there room in your heart
For God to write His story?

[Verse 3]
Shepherds counting sheep in the night
Do not fear the glory light
You are precious in His sight
God has come to raise the lowly

[Chorus 2]
Is there room in your heart?
Is there room in your heart?
Is there room in your heart
For God to write His story?
You can come as you are
But it may set you apart
When you make room in your heart
And trade your dreams for His glory

[Bridge]
Make room in your heart
Make room in your heart

[Verse 4]
Mother holds the Promise tight
Every wrong will be made right
The road is straight and the burden’s light
For in His hands He holds tomorrow

[Chorus 2]
Is there room in your heart?
Is there room in your heart?
Is there room in your heart
For God to write His story?
You can come as you are
But it may set you apart
When you make room in your heart
And trade your dreams for His glory

[Outro]
Make room in your heart
Make room in your heart
Make room in your heart
Make room in your heart
